EVEREADY SETS BENCHMARK HIGH FOR UPLIFTMENT

Eveready, South Africa’s only battery manufacturer, has come to the rescue of several children in need at the SOS Children’s Village in Port Elizabeth. In doing so, they have set the bar high for other companies this festive season.

The Proudly South African Company has replaced the entire roof
of the house it sponsors at the SOS Children’s Village at a cost
of R40 000. This is over and above Eveready’s annual grant of
R62 000, which goes towards general expenses such as food,
clothing, education, healthcare and recreational activities.
The Eveready house, as it has been called for the past eight
years, houses eight children between the ages of two and
seventeen as well as their house mother. It is one of sixteen
houses at the Village in Schauderville, which was established
eighteen years ago.

The house has been given a new lease on life with fresh bantering,
clean tiles, paint, water proofing, sealing and new fascia boards.
The quality of the workmanship was of primary concern to Eveready,
which is why William Scott Contractors was selected for the job.
The project, aptly named, “It’s Christmas! Let’s care enough”
culminated in a Christmas party for the eight children from the
Eveready house today.  Father Christmas was on hand to spread
some festive cheer, with plenty of presents in hand to brighten
up the day even further.

Managing Director of Eveready, Avijit Das says that, “From the
beginning it was determined that Eveready’s involvement with the
SOS Children’s Village in Port Elizabeth would be for the long term.
To see the children flourish in the care of SOS is truly inspirational
for us. The replacement of the roof was a sign of our continued
commitment to the children and their well-being”.

Next year, Eveready will be taking this initiative a step further
by refurbishing the house’s rooms, where each department in the
company will be allocated a room to redecorate. Ultimately, the
aim is to involve all employees, from the shop floor to the boardroom,
in renewing the house and building a better future for its occupants.

The other fifteen houses in the Village are also in need of
refurbishing, with new ceilings, paint and roof tiles being among
the priorities. Accordingly, Eveready extends a challenge to other
companies and fellow sponsors of the SOS Children’s Village to follow
suite and be ever ready to do more than what is expected of them.

National Corporate Fundraising Co-ordinator for the SOS Children’s
Villages South Africa, Mandy Spies, says that, “Five of the sixteen
houses still require corporate sponsors. We would be delighted to
obtain sponsorship from more companies like Eveready. They have
proven themselves time and again by going the extra mile”.
