Community Social Centres

There are three Social Centres, in Qwa Qwa, Mathanjana and Sekhukhune. The focus in these Centres is to form partnerships with community structures and to enable them to tackle the issues facing orphans and vulnerable children at grass roots level. Projects include income generation, childcare skills, youth activities, HIV & AIDS awareness and community capacity building.

Qwa Qwa Social Centre is situated in the province of the Free State - a very dry and impoverished area. Four family homes integrated into the community have been built to house orphaned and abandoned children. They are cared for by mothers selected from the local community, and grow up as a normal family.

A Social Centre also provides activities for youth and skills development training.

Situated in the province of Mpumalanga, the Mathanjana Social Centre works in two areas, Pankop and Phake. Strong partnerships have been formed between SOS, community-based organisations and local government departments, to create genuine community structures responsible for the care and support of orphaned and vulnerable children in the community. A "drop-in" centre run by a community group provides orphans with daily hot meals and a safe environment to do homework in the afternoons.

Sekhukhune Social Centre is situated in Limpopo province, very near to the Mpumalanga border. The project currently works in two communities within the Grobblersdal municipality, Sephaku and Kgaphamadi, and supports 90 households most of which are grandparent-headed. The project works in partnership with the Reach For Life community-based organisation.

During 2007 the community will be supported to establish a community-based foster care organisation to provide long-term family care for 24 children living in four community family homes.
