Ennerdale Village

The first Village to be established in South Africa, Ennerdale was built in 1983 in what was then a "coloured" township south of Johannesburg city centre.

The Ennerdale Village consisting of 16 family houses, is home to 158 children. There are also 3 youth houses, 2 for boys situated outside the Village and one girls' youth house in the Village premises.

The Village also has a thriving SOS Kindergarten, which offers quality pre-school education to Village children as well as children from the surrounding community. Well qualified teachers are managed by a Kindergarten Principal, and the smile on this little one's face tells just how happy the children are in this facility!

The Hermann Gmeiner Social Centre was built in 1998, across the road from the Ennerdale Village. It consists of a day care centre, a life skills training centre, a Youth house and 8 cottages recently built for retired SOS mothers who have no family to care for them.

Important skills are learned here by community members, which enable them to generate incomes for their own families.
