Youth facilities

Youth houses exist in most Villages, where youth are given an opportunity to live more independent lives, taking control of their finances and making decisions about their futures. This is done through a Youth Development Plan, devised jointly by the youth, Social Worker, Youth Leader and SOS Mother, and is something that the youth can work towards achieving with pride and expectation.
SOS Children's Villages South Africa does not have a cut-off age when youth leave their SOS home - rather the youth are encouraged and supported towards independence, and are only disengaged when they are ready to stand on their own feet. Even then, relationships made within the SOS family are maintained, often throughout that youth's life.

Throughout their time in an SOS Village, children are encouraged to take part in various extramural activities, so that they can develop their talents. Sometimes this leads to them achieving remarkable things, such as Thulani from Cape Town Village who is now attending the famous Drakensberg Boys' Choir School, because of his beautiful singing voice.

Because many of the children in our Villages have had traumatic beginnings to their lives, we focus on encouraging them to believe in themselves and to strive at making their dreams come true.
Just about every boy dreams of becoming a famous soccer star - and at SOS Children's Villages, boys are lucky to be able to get up close to a real soccer icon: Lucas "Roo" Radebe.

Lucas is a FIFA Ambassador for SOS, and although he attends official functions in this capacity, he loves nothing more than spending a day at the Villages coaching the children and youth, and motivating them to strive for their dreams.
